CVS or chrionic villus sampling is a diagnosis for testing chromosomal abnormalities and other disorders. This is recommended by the health care experts to those who are at a high risk. It is a procedure that involves removal of chrionic villi cells from placenta when it gets attached to the uterine wall.

The samples can be collected in two ways:

  • The most common method may be getting the chorionic vili cells absorbed into the catheter. This is the Tran cervical method.
  • The other method may be the Tran abdominal method. With the help of ultrasound, thin needle can be pushed into the placenta through the abdomen.
  • Amniocentesis is a procedure similar to this.
  • The CVS in this regard can be said to be better than that of amniocentesis for it provides faster results and is capable of providing huge samples.
  • CVS tests can be performed after the last menstrual period preferably between the 10th and 13th week.

What does CVS detect?

  • The test performed mainly detects Down syndrome and cystic fibrosis and is quite different from amniocentesis.
  • CVS also provides for paternity testing by providing access to DNA. The DNA is collected from the would-be father and then compared wit the DNA of the child in CVS. This test result can provide up to 99% of accuracy.
